You may be thinking about a digital marketing coach for your private practice. But unsure if this is the best time to employ one.

But when is the best time to employ a coach?

What can you expect from a digital marketing coach?

And most importantly, what traits should you be looking for as you begin your search.

Let’s break these items down so that you can make a smart decision for your private practice.

WHEN DO I NEED A DIGITAL MARKETING COACH?

Here are some signs that it may be time for you to be considering a digital marketing coach for your practice.

  • The number of referrals that are coming in has drastically slowed down since you began.
  • You are looking at your numbers and realized that you haven’t been able to scale your business as well as you would have liked.
  • The marketing you were doing in the beginning is no longer working for you.
  • You really don’t have a firm grasp on the principles of digital marketing and are tired of the feeling of overwhelm.
  • You’re tired of winging it and want a solid plan/strategy that you can follow.
  • You’ve just been doing what your friends are doing but not getting the same results.

I could go on and on here, but you get the idea. If you’re not seeing the results that you like or not really sure what you’re doing, it’s time.

The two things I tell practitioners about their marketing is that it takes consistency and it takes a solid plan based upon YOU. Marketing should be an extension of YOU.

After all, people will make decisions about coming to your practice based upon how well they feel connected with YOU.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM A DIGITAL MARKETING COACH?

I love it when I get asked this question because there tends to be a big misconception on what is to be expected when working with a digital marketing coach.

You can expect to learn a lot about a variety of marketing strategies. About what works and what doesn’t and why.

It’s also reasonable to expect that you and your coach will develop a marketing plan that you and/or your team can implement.

Developing knowledge and strategy will equip you to make good decisions in the future. Whether you will be doing the marketing yourself or having an agency do the work, you need to be clear on what’s being done and why.

Otherwise, you set yourself up for disappointment.

Something that you should NOT be expecting from digital marketing coaching, is that all of the work be done for you.

It’s one of the reasons why coaching tends to be less expensive than done-for-you agency costs.

This should really be viewed as a learning opportunity.

WHAT TRAITS SHOULD I BE LOOKING FOR?

You’ll want to know the success rate of your digital marketing coach.

Have they been doing this for a while?

Or is this something that they’re trying out as a side hustle with no experience?

You’ll want to see evidence of this. Ask them if they can produce case studies or referrals of people they have worked with.

You’ll also want to take notice of how they conduct the interview.

A good marketing coach will tend to ask a lot of questions.

They should be asking about the kinds of things that you’re doing. What kinds of results you’re seeing.

Where, when, and how often you are marketing your practice, etc.

You’ll also want to be wary of anyone who is making promises that are too good to be true.

You know the old saying, “if it’s too good to be true, it probably is”.

So if you have someone promising you that their coaching is going to have your practice become as popular as Psychology Today within 30 days, this should be a major red flag.

I’ve said for a long time now, marketing is a marathon, not a sprint.

The time to get a marketing coach is not 30 days before you close your doors or are in the middle of a tragically downed economy.

The time to focus on learning your marketing is before things are tragic.
