Has your offering changed over time?

I remember when I was contemplating leaving my corporate job behind to go out on my own.

I wondered what my niche would be.

At first, I started to think that I would focus on small business owners but drill my services down to focus solely on social media marketing.

Shortly after, a family member came down with a debilitating case of clinical depression.

I considered how I had suffered burnout and the negative impact it had on my health.

The mental health profession was filled with so many kind and compassionate professionals.

They are wonderful people that I wanted to help.

Sadly, they’re not given a course in marketing or business management in grad school.

My Offering Changed Over Time

I knew that I wanted to work with mental health professionals.

But there were other areas within marketing that these talented professionals would need help with.

There would be more to marketing their practices than just social media.

So I decided I would provide both coaching and done-for-you services.

It seemed like this would be the way I would have the most impact in helping them.

I changed my offering over time.

My Offering Changed Over Time

As I went down this new path, I learned a bit more about the needs of my clients.

Because many of them did not understand marketing, many of them didn’t want anything to do with it.

They preferred to outsource most, if not all of it.

The majority of my clientele were done-for-you services.

What I learned along the way, was that it put them at a distinct disadvantage for managing the process.

Because they didn’t have a working knowledge of how and why many marketing tasks are completed they were resistant to much of the process.

This would put them at risk for unscrupulous agencies to take advantage of them and drain their wallets.

Add to that, that I really didn’t enjoy the done for you aspect, I knew that I had to make a change.

I changed my offering over time.

Fine Tuning The Approach

I realized that my real passion came from education.

There is something so gratifying about working with someone who is overwhelmed by the technology and breaking it down.

There is sheer joy in watching them get that light bulb moment where it all makes sense.

Now I create courses where I break all of this information down into bite-sized chunks.

I also offer them one on one coaching to hold their hand through the process.

But, as you can see, this realization didn’t come the moment I walked away from corporate America.

This was a journey of discovery.

Not only a discovery of my clientele but of my own passions as well.

It’s not uncommon for your offering to change over time.

It’s the very reason why developing your niche is so important.

When you get clarity on who you serve and HOW you will serve them, your world of opportunities opens.

You are truly giving your best self to your clients.

It’s easier to book clients when they are able to see and feel your passion.

  1. We really do need to learn to adapt as we grow with our business. Sometimes we find the need before we know we should go that direction making the answer easier. Niching down is a tricky thing to do. Getting a marketer like you who one can trust is such a relief!
