Will coaching make you wealthy? I think that’s the thing that most private practice owners and business owners want to know when they embark on the notion of hiring a coach.
The answer to that question is, I don’t know. It really depends on what your goals are when you consider the idea of hiring one.
There are so many types of coaches that can impact your practice. There are coaches in categories anywhere from business building to marketing and leadership with everything in between. So, before you go searching for your perfect coaching guru, it’s critical that you be very clear on what your goals are before embarking on this journey. Here’s what I know for certain.
Coaching will take you out of your comfort zone.
A good coach will stretch you outside of your comfort zone and begin to challenge the way you conduct business. And, if you stop and think about it, that’s exactly what you want, isn’t it? Operating at a status quo has only gotten you so far. It stands to reason that you would want someone to take you to the next level, whatever your goals and aspirations may be. It’s the very reason many of us will seek out a coach in the first place. To take us to the next level.
Coaching will change the way you think.
This is particularly true of how you think about the way you are operating your practice. We all come to the table with a certain set of values and beliefs about what it will take to grow a business. Some will do plenty of research, others will listen to friends and colleagues and try to emulate their success, while others will go in to it with a cookie cutter approach. But, we all adapt a level of thinking that says, this is what I need to do for my business to be successful.
Coaching is meant to shake up those thought patterns and challenge your perspective. If you stop and think about the amount of time and attention you’ve put into your practice to date, it really makes a lot of sense. Over time, you’ve become too close to it to really be objective. You’ve nurtured it and grown it to the level where it’s at. It’s become your baby, your pride and joy. But now it’s time to take it to the next level and you’re just not sure where to start or how to get it there. A coach is your outside objective third party that can see things with fresh eyes that you’re just too close to, to evaluate clearly.
Coaching may be needed more than once.
Growing your practice will happen in stages. Depending on how large you want to grow, how wealthy you want to become, or the impact you want to make in the world, you may need more than one coach during any given period of time. For example, you may start out needing a marketing coach that will show you how to position your practice in the market place and create the brand recognition and exposure you need to fill up your schedule with your ideal clients. You may need this coach at several stages in the continual growth of your practice.
As you grow your practice, you may need a finance coach who can show you how to best manage your assets to position you for expansion.
Further down the road, as you begin to acquire a larger staff, you may need a business coach who can help you with the training and development of those staff of professionals that will keep you operating at peak efficiency.
Lastly, you may need an Executive Coach or Leadership Coach who will show you your impact on the team, and how to lead them from one stage to another in a way that allows everyone to absorb and embrace change.
What I know for certain, is that very few of us can do it alone. We all need to surround ourselves with a tribe of dedicated professionals that can help us see the things we can’t. Through our very best of intentions, we can often go through life, day to day, with blinders on in certain areas. To grow your practice to all it can be, you will need a coach at some point in your journey, if not several. You’ll need to learn to embrace life outside your comfort zone.
