Congratulations! You’ve decided that having a blog for your business is a sound idea. But when you consider the concept of writing on a consistent basis, it seems a bit overwhelming. What could you possibly have to say that will engage your readers on a consistent basis? More than you might think. When we tend to look at the idea of putting ourselves out there and committing a thought concept or idea to print, all of a sudden it seems as if we have nothing to say. It’s kind of like being put on the spot and told to be funny but can’t seem to think of a joke. The point is, you really do have lots to say, you just don’t think about what you know.

Have you ever been in a situation when a client or customer asks you something about your business and you start providing them with the answer and find yourself going on and on? It’s because this is something that you’re passionate about. This is your business, your baby, your pride and joy. While writing articles that go on and on about your business would be considered Spam and turn people off, there are topics regarding your business that are not.

Maintaining a well crafted consistent blog will convey to your readers that you are an expert in the field and someone who can be trusted. This is good news for you and your business. Since the majority of consumers spend their time researching online before making a purchase, this poises you to stand out as the knowledgeable business they’re looking for.

Start by studying the topics that your industry’s leaders blog about and you’ll gain insight on what you can build posts around. For example, if you’re a psychologist specializing in depression, a quick search of leading psychologist blogs will give you ideas ranging anywhere from, tops signs that you have depression, to cutting edge medicines used to treat the disorder. You can build a range of blog posts from a single topic. The same would be true if you were a computer repair company. A quick look within the industry would help you develop articles that can take you from, how to detect malware on your computer to the top 5 antivirus softwares used to detect and abolish them. These blog posts can even be for or against the research that you’ve gathered.

To avoid running out of steam on content ideas, try using an editorial calendar. Schedule some time for yourself to brainstorm blog topics and commit them to a calendar that will give you consistent content ideas to keep your readers engaged. Whether you blog once a day, once a week or once a month, you’ll want to have planned content to avoid last minute brainstorming and developing a blog post that is not researched or well written.

It’s also a good idea when you first start your blog to post a few articles at a time. Not only will this give your readers a wider variety of topics to choose from, it will also give you the opportunity to see which topics are giving you the most engagement and give you solid ranking in search engine optimization.

Some other content ideas to consider when writing a blog for your business may include writing about industry news that could include new trends or products, updates about your company and employees and guest blogs or interviews. People are flattered when asked to write a piece for your blog and more so when asked to interview them. Both parties win in this scenario as both will ultimately post your blog on their site giving you twice the exposure.

You’ll want to ensure that your blog post is rich with keywords to increase your search engine optimization. From time to time you’ll also want to ask questions in your blog. It gives your readers the opportunity to leave comments of their own which can prompt ideas for your next blog and increase your engagement. Every industry from the dry and mundane to the fast paced and exciting has content that can be produced and will be searched by readers, thus ensuring that your blog content is king.

Let’s put this content creation to the test, shall we? What are the top five questions you get asked most in your profession?

Great post Lisa, you offer great advice to those thinking of blogging. I really like the advice about brainstorming and planning ahead, as this really helped me. I found a downloadable planner and it gave me an idea to create my own to use and share with others to help them plan their blogging. It is a powerful tool.
